Supreme Court directs Uttar Pradesh government to decide remission plea of ex-BSP MLA Uday Bhan Singh in triple murder case

The Supreme Court on Friday directed the government of Uttar Pradesh to decide by July 26 on the remission plea filed by former MLA Uday Bhan Singh, in connection with a triple-murder case of 1999.

The Vacation Bench of Justice Abhay Oka and Justice Ahsanuddin Amanullah issued notice to the state government in a contempt petition moved by Singh and further extended the petitioner's interim bail till July 26.

The Apex Court directed the respondent (state government) to make immediate compliance with the order dated April 29, 2024 and place the order passed on record.

On April 29, the Bench of Justice Oka and Justice Ujjal Bhuyan had set aside the State government's decision to deny remission (early release from prison) to Singh on the grounds that he had been convicted for three murders.

After taking note that three other convicts similarly placed with Singh had already been granted remission, the Bench allowed Singh's plea and directed the UP government to reconsider his request.

However, since no decision was taken by the government, Singh filed a contempt of court petition alleging that the UP government had failed to comply with the directive.

On June 28, Singh's counsel told the top court of the country that he has already undergone 20 years and 7 months in jail and that despite the April 29 directive of the Apex Court, no fresh decision has been taken by the State for Singh's remission.

Advocates Sanjay Singh and Divyesh Pratap Singh appeared for Singh.
